The Probinysana's Guide in Surviving the City
June 11, 2017![]() |
| Sorry for the grainy photo, I was only using my phone to took this :) |
All my life I have lived in the province. I am also used of constantly having my family, especially my older sister (since she's just older by one year) around. But I have always been interested in living a life far from them. I always wanted to experience how is it like to have your own place, cook your own food and wash your own clothes, A.K.A. on how to be INDEPENDENT. That's why after I graduated and an opportunity came a month after graduation, I quickly grabbed it. Although I am only transferring to Cebu which is not that far from Negros, it was already a big leap of faith for someone like me since I am always the little probinsyana girl.
In my 2 years of living in the city away from my family, I have come up with a set of rules to live by in order not to get myself in situations that would make me want to go home (these are more "safety rules btw).
1. If you are relatively new in a particular
2. HAVE A KEYPAD CELLPHONE (or whatever you call it). Bad guys = snatchers, thieves, etc. are all around, especially in the downtown and tiangge areas. In order not to attract their attention, do not use your smart phones in busy places.
3. In relation to the one above, if you are going to places that are unsafe or has a reputation, dress simply and do not show off your jewelry.
4. If it is very late and you do not have a choice but to ride a taxi/Grab/Uber going home, inform one of your family members or your closest friend in the city about the details of the car (e.g., plate number). Never be too complacent, especially with Grab cars or Uber because let's face it, there are still instances wherein the driver did something bad to its passenger.
5. Maintain an open communication with your family. Always call them and tell them about your day. Your parents will surely appreciate that.
6. Make new friends, but maintain the old ones.
7. Keep your weekends busy. I know that weekends are supposed to be our time to relax, but it is also our time to hang out with friends and to explore the city and its neighboring towns. Also, this is my trick to be able to stop the homesickness from kicking in :)
That's it. That's how I managed to live on my own. If you have a few more tips, share them to me by commenting down below.
Looking forward to hear from you!
